5 Tips for Enjoying Healthy Winter Holidays

During the winter holidays, there are plenty of excuses to take a break from fitness. We’re extra busy and there’s often extra unhealthy food around. But you can enjoy the holiday season without sacrificing your fitness goals.

5 Tips for Enjoying Healthy Winter Holidays DFW Personal Fitness Gym1) Eat What You Normally Do

Though there’s a good chance you’ll be spending more time with people and attending more gatherings this time of year, there will still be many meals you have complete control over. Stick with your regular nutrition routine as much as you can. Also, don’t skip meals before a party (you’ll be more likely to feel extra hungry and overeat).

2) Indulge Mindfully

How much you indulge during the holidays is an individual choice, but in most cases, a little splurge isn’t going to ruin your fitness plan. Just plan for how you’ll deviate from your normal eating habits. If you’ll be at a buffet, keep a close eye on your portion sizes. Choose your favorite desserts and have a piece, rather than sampling every sweet thing. And if you’re going to a party where you can bring food, opt for something healthy like a vegetable side dish.

3) Drink Water

There are so many holiday drink options that it can be tempting to replace some of the water you normally drink with treats like eggnog. Make sure that you’re staying hydrated and choosing low- or no-calorie drink options most of the time like water (including flavored seltzers) or tea. As with other treats, indulge in holiday drinks in moderation.

4) Get Some Good Sleep

One of the best things you can do for your body is to make sure you get enough sleep. For most people, that means 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Getting the right amount of sleep helps improve your metabolism as well as keeping you feeling more alert.

5) Keep Moving

Though your schedule might be extra busy, make sure you still make time to get moving. Now probably isn’t the time to start an ambitious new workout plan, but you can still fit in at least a 30-minute workout most days. For an extra bonus to motivation, join a group training class to provide a supportive fitness community.
